Bronislawa Wajs, known as Papusza, was a well respected Polish poet of Roma origin. This biographical film follows her difficult life in the context of historical events during the 20th century, the story of her love for writer JerzyFicowski, the traditional nomadic way of life with her family, the Nazi terrorduring World War II, and the sad end to her life during the communist regime. Yet, the film itself is one big visual poem, filmed entirely in black and white, with skilled use of chiaroscuro, the camera stunningly underscoring the melancholic mood of themovie.
