A woman finds herself trapped behind a strange invisible barrier in the middle of the Alpine peaks. Julian Polsler directed this mysterious film full of horror elements; the story is based on a novel by Marlen Haushofer. The initial shock of her situation and the hope for an early rescue gradually fade into a realization that she cannot escape from her prison. Her return to a simpler way of life in the woods, independent from the rest of the world, can be seen as a modern day Robinson Crusoe story, but also as a radical critique of modern society.

Iris and Peter von Roten are perhaps the most famous, provocative and beautiful couple in recent Swiss history. Iris, a lawyer and feminist from Basel, caused an uproar in 1958 because of her book, Women in the Playpen. In the book, she called for economic, political and sexual equality between men and women, and was fully supported in this by her husband. They applied these convictions in their marital relationship which also included the principles of free love, and this in particular generated resistance from a bigoted society. The mixture of feature film, documentary and archival footage presents a love story comparable to that of Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre.

Marius is divorced and only sees his little daughter Sophia on certain designated days… and today is one of them.  When he arrives, he is told that Sofia is sick and cannot go out with him.  When Marius insists, the situation begins to spin out of control.  Negotiation, persuasion, coercion, physical attacks and police intervention… this minimalist drama is a brilliant analysis of a precarious situation where nothing is as it seems. Is this the last desperate act of a hopeless father trying to pick up his daughter for the weekend or the psychopathic manifestations of an unbalanced man’s true personality?

Former teacher Paul and his caring wife Claire join ambitious brother Serge and his wife, Babette, for a “friendly” dinner in a posh restaurant. The film was adapted from a Herman Koch novel, which criticizes the hyprocrisy of society and denounces everything from politics to education. But …Karl will do anything not to be sent back to the orphanage. Due to his unquestioning obedience and execution of orders, Hasselbond begins to like him, which brings out Gustav’s hostility. Swedish portal, The Pirate Bay, has become Hollywood’s biggest nightmare. It is the most popular file sharing website and you can illegally download almost anything from it. It’s not surprising that this “pirate bay” of the Internet is such a bane to all the big players, from record companies to Hollywood studios. Internet piracy is a phenomenon presented by the media as something negative that should definitely be condemned. However, there is a deeper issue behind this dispute between the three founders of The Pirate Bay and the entertainment industry, and that is the freedom of the Internet and the thinking, sharing and distribution of ideas. In this Age of the Internet, the question of ownership must be reconsidered.

Danish indie pop band, Efterklang, who played several concerts in Prague, journeyed to Spitsbergen, to a place called Piramida, formerly a Russian mining town, now inhabited only by polar bears. The stories of former residents of Piramida connect the past to the present. The aim of the expedition was to find and record the sounds and noises of the crumbling buildings and to capture the „audio track“ of Piramida, which they later used for the recording of their last album, simply titled Piramida.  This album was indeed their last, as it came at the end of Efterklang’s career and both the film and the album became their swan song.

Campaign promising favoring greener politics have disappeared a year after the election and when the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs presents a plan to drill for oil in the rich deposits of Greenland with significant cooperation from the USA, not even pressure from the media can change the situation, and a militant activist takes justice into his own hands. How to label Marko Brecelj? Director Janez Burger answers this question: “Marko Brecelj is poetry. The kind of poetry called Life. And poetry can be expressed only in verse. ” Marko Brecelj is a legend on the Slovenian music scene, thanks to his participation in groups like Buldozer, Zlatni zubi and Marjanov cudni zajec. His avant-garde, experimental singer-songwriter style is characterized by bitter, cynical remarks, interjected with humorous comments aimed at society. Janez Burger artfully captures the „soft“ terrorism, personality and attitude of this distinctive Slovenian poet/singer-songwriter.

Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life
France, USA
Director: Joann Sfar
2010 / 130 min. / French version with Czech subtitles
Cast: Eric Elmosnino, Laetitia Casta, Lucy Gordon

Serge Gainsbourg was a provocateur and a master of scandal, as well as a sublime musician and artist. He stunned proud France by singing the Marseillaise in the rhythm of reggae; he used banknotes to light up cigarettes live on air; he seduced the sex symbol Bridgitte Bardot; and his duet with Jane Birkin "Je t'aime... moi non plus" was banned in several countries for its obscene lyrics. This film, as entertaining and turbulent as his life, tells the story of those whom Ginsbourg offended or seduced, of the hits he wrote, and of the reach of his charisma.

This documentary film charts individual terrorist acts in former Czechoslovakia. Stano, Vladimir and Fero - three men who tried to disrupt the stale uniformity of the gray civil masses during the Czechoslovak normalization, and were subsequently sentenced to imprisonment for terrorism. The film is balancing on the edge of documentary and fiction. All three heroes are re-acting their former actions and at the same time revealing what they do today. Against the background of their story loom the questions of morality, of the irrationality of terrorism and of the meaning of its deadly force in today's world.

This film odyssey is a day and a night in the life of Niko Fischer, a young man drifting aimlessly through the uncertainties of his own existence: breakups and casual relationships, unexpected reunions, disillusionment... but it's also a satire on contemporary art and society. Thanks to its humor, representation and subject matter, it reminds us of the films of Woody Allen and Jim Jarmusch. Jan Ole Gerster's charming generational statement can be thought of as a parallel male version of Noah Baumbach's Frances Ha. Oh Boy completely dominated the German Film Awards and won the European Discovery title at the European Film Awards.

Ettore Scola is a highly honored figure of Italian cinema, although it might seem that he has remained in the shadows of more famous directors like Michelangelo Antonioni or Federico Fellini. Scola and Fellini worked together as young men, forming a lifelong friendship and strong bond. Their many common experiences led Scola to the idea of making a film that would be an intimate tribute to the memory of a dear friend and a famous director. In a special collage of images, he blends archival footage and photographs to reconstruct the memorable spirit of Felini's films, with reference to specific films and their characteristic dreamy atmosphere. This is a personal, commemorative film full of fellinian humor and imagination.

The camera follows a lonely young man and his ordinary, everyday life from an almost documentary-naturalistic perspective. Under the guise of a quiet life, the outlines of reality begin to take shape – three days in the life of a young man in Athens, fighting hunger, unemployment and finally, homelessness, without even a place to lay his head. This debut film from Ektoras Lygizos is an allegory of the times of crisis in Greece. Boy Eating the Bird's Food is a depiction of the poverty which can affect any one of us at any time, but also a look at the innate struggle to retain one's own dignity in every situation.

This peculiar mosaic of stories from contemporary Germany is a collection of deviations and obsessions, anxieties and neuroses. A pedicurist who carefully collects the hard skin from the feet of his female patients, a policeman with a secret obsession for animal costumes, a superficial documentary-maker searching for "the big topic", a spoiled brat taking advantage of his wealthy parents ... seemingly unrelated stories begin to intertwine brilliantly, resulting in an absurd finale. Is this a radically raised middle finger toward the viewer or a scathing satire on how cruel life can be?

Simon is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. He feels powerless to change any of these things. The arrival of a new co-worker, James, serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon's exact physical double and his opposite -confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon's horror, James slowly starts taking over his life. In a playful adaptation of Dostoevsky's novel the director Richard Ayoade (Submarine) mixes humor and distinctive aesthetics with Kafkaesque atmosphere.

Willthis act of revenge change anything? The Daughter is a good example. Itincorporates the feelings of social dissatisfaction of the nation into a classical thriller about revenge.

Dju, Dana and Lily haven't seen each other for many years. When they meet unexpectedly, the result is an impulsive trip to the seaside village of Krapetz where they spent their youth. For all three of them, it is a symbolic escape from the world, from the tediousness of work and the disappointments of life. The idyll on the shores of the Black Sea is suddenly disrupted by the local mafia. This random reunion of girlhood friends leads to an unexpected series of events involving old loves, the search for self identity, and confrontation with the past, but also the trafficking of women and a conflict with the underworld.

Young Milan escapes from the war-ridden Balkans to Budapest where, because of his medical school experience, he lands a job as a medic in a night ambulance. As it turns out, the Hippocratic oath is just meaningless words to his two colleagues, who operate a profitable business, subsidised by the funeral industry, and based on the corpse trade. Milan is now faced with a dilemma – follow his conscience or take the money that can help him bring his girlfriend to Hungary. This thoroughly black crime-comedy debut from Mark Bodzsar is clearly inspired by Tarantino's explicitness and the Coen brothers' cynicism.

2012 / 116 min. / Hungarian verison with Czech and English subtitles
Cast: Eszter Ónodi, Zsolt Bogdán, Babett Jávor, Piroska Móga, Iván Kamarás, Adél Jordán

Little Aglaya was raised in a circus since she was born. Her mother is an acrobat and her father, a clown. Aglaya too would have had a circus career there if her parents hadn't argued with the arrogant circus director and been forced to leave everything behind and flee the country. They manage to find work in a circus in Switzerland but the future is certainly not rosy for them there either. This poetic story is presented through the eyes of a child and set in a circus milieu with echoes of events from the second half of the 20th century. Despite its dreamy atmosphere, the story is based on real life events of writer, Aglaya Veteranyi.

Director: Miroslav Mandić
2013 / 90 min. / Slovenian-Bosnian version with Czech and English subtitles
Cast: Senad Basic, Mojca Funkl, Peter Musevski, Iva Babic, Gregor Zorc

Former Bosnian rock star Toni Riff escaped to Slovenia during the war and married Sonia, one of his fans. Now, his music career over for more than two decades, Toni finds himself living off the earnings of his wife, who works as a phone-sex operator, much to his chagrin. One day, someone offers to organize a come-back concert for him. Will this opportunity save him and lead him out of his depression? Miroslav Mandic's tragicomedy looks at some of the less obvious consequences of war. Instead of dwelling on the horrors of war, he focuses on the emotional repercussions: the vanished dreams, the talent buried in the cemeteries, the destructiveness of burnout and the setting in of depression as a result of unfulfilled expectations.
